Tips for Re-entering the Workforce

We hear it from our members often…the fear and necessity about going back to work.

This transition can be both empowering and daunting especially if you’ve been at home or have a gap in your resume. While an opportunity to step back into the professional world, regain financial independence and pursue passions, it’s also an endeavor filled with uncertainty and ambivalence.

There are difficulties in finding suitable childcare, managing time effectively, and overcoming potential biases or gaps in the resume. Needless to say, a single mom returning to the workforce faces a unique set of challenges and opportunities.

One thing for sure is you’re not alone. This is the reality for many mom’s after uncoupling or divorce and while it will require adaptability, it's one that can lead to personal growth, career achievements, and an inspiring example for your kids. You’ve got this!

Self Reflection

Take some time for self-reflection to identify your skills, strengths, and interests. Consider how they align with potential career paths.

Refresh your Resume

Highlight your most recent experiences, skills, and accomplishments. Emphasize any professional development or skills gained during your time away from the workforce.

Network your Little Heart Out

Networking with friends, family and former colleagues is so powerful. People love to help others so putting yourself out there and letting folks know you’re looking will increase your chances of meetings and introductions. One thing always leads to another!

Online Presence

Update your LinkedIn profile or other professional network - consider joining industry-specific groups to expand your network. Whether you’re interested in marketing, community, product, there’s a group and they typically feature job boards as well.

Consider Flexible Work Arrangements

Explore opportunities for flexible work arrangements, such as part-time or remote work. Many employers now offer flexible options that can accommodate various life situations.

Prepare for Interviews

Practice common interview questions and prepare concise yet compelling responses that highlight your skills and experiences. Be ready to discuss any gaps in your employment history openly.

Be Open-Minded

Be open to opportunities that may not exactly align with your previous career path. Consider entry-level positions or roles that can serve as stepping stones to your desired position.

As we navigate the post-divorce landscape, let us embrace the transformative power within us, recognizing that the ability to reinvent oneself is a testament to our capacity for resilience, adaptability, and the pursuit of a more authentic and fulfilling life journey. In the face of change, there lies the opportunity for profound self-discovery and the creation of a new narrative filled with purpose and possibility.
